"We do hard, often painstaking work to generate the right numbers to help make a good decision - but all that work is wasted if those numbers never take root in the minds of decision makers."
One of my goals in 2022 is to share some of my favorite data books and resources for nonprofits (especially small ones). Today's recommendation is the book Making Numbers Count. It is a quick read with lots of ideas for translating numbers into memorable, meaningful stories.
Here's the thing -- our brains aren't hard-wired to understand numbers well. However, we are INCREDIBLY good at understanding and remembering stories. So, if we can translate numbers into real-world experiences and stories, they will be much more impactful.
This is especially important for nonprofits. How we tell stories with numbers can make a huge difference in their ability to get funding and do much-needed work. How we communicate with numbers really matters! Making numbers Count is a great resource for doing this better. I enjoyed reading it and will definitely use what I learned in my own data projects. https://buff.ly/3M5jTAJ
